Death Race 2 is a 2008 American action film directed by Roel Reine. It is a sequel to the 2007 release, Death Race, with Jason Statham reprising his role as protagonist Frankenstein. In the film, drivers compete in a brutal cross-country race in which points are earned by finishing ahead of rival racers and eliminating them from competition, either through physical contact or using weapons located throughout the course. The cast includes Danny Trejo as Monk; Sean Bean as Carlito Keyes; Ian McShane as Mr. G; Michael Madsen as Mr. Grimm; Ben Kingsley, Michelle Yeoh, and Hwang Jung-min (Hollywood Kung-Fu Generation) as the filmmakers; Arnold Vosloo as Cage; Tetsuji Tamayama as Sloane; William Fichtner as Professor Huxton; Shin Koyamada (Vampire Hunter D), Yuji Oda (Hayabusa), and Shō Hayami (Ronin Warriors) as the Japanese team; John Cusack, Joan Chen, Donnie Yen, Shuya Sophia Nakajima (Gantz) and Takeshi Kitano (Kiki's Delivery Service/Death Note/Yakuza/Mushishi) as the Chinese Team. Death Race 2 was the first film in the series to be distributed in 3D when it was released in 2008. A sequel, titled "Death Race 3" was released on October 19, 2008. Death Race 2 opened at #1 in Russia with $1.3 million on its opening weekend, one of the biggest openings for an American film in Russia that year, beating "Watchmen". The movie was also top ranking movie of its week in Germany and Poland. Death Race 2 earned $14.5 million throughout North America, which is good for the seventh highest of the year. The film also ranked high in several International markets. In China, Death Race 2 was the highest-grossing foreign film of its weekend, earning $3.2 million to make it the second-highest grossing film of its weekend; in Germany, the movie debut at #1 with $1.3 million. As of September 2009, "Death Race 2" has grossed $39,061,296 worldwide with an estimated budget of $65 million.
